Sophie Powell is the author of the novel The Mushroom Man (Putnam Penguin), a sophisticated and magical debut which explores childhood fantasies as well as messy adult truths about family relationships. The book received glowing reviews, including one from the New York Times Book Review and was translated into several languages. She has also published short stories and creative non-fiction.

Sophie is an adjunct professor of creative writing at Boston College. Previously she has taught at New York University, Georgetown University, George Washington University and with the Lesley Seminars. She is assistant director of Abroad Writers Conferences.

Sophie's new novel is The Poppy Queen, which should be completed by the end of the year. She and her husband, Christian, are also finishing a screenplay, Marston Moor, a thriller set in England involving Oliver Cromwell.
